Security updates from Montreux Security Personnel.
Montreux Security wants to alert Montreux Residents and employees of bear sightings within Montreux. To help prevent future visits by bears, all outside food sources should be eliminated. No garbage put out until the morning of garbage pickup, no feeding pets outside, no accessible bird feeders, all garbage bin lids closed after each use. When bears become habituated on human or pet food, the bears lose because that's when they get into trouble.
The only reason the bear has wandered into your area is because he/she smells food. If people see a bear they need to give it space, make lots of noise, and look big while getting to a safe place. Most black bears (which do come in lots of other colors!) are shy and will run if you just clap your hands and do a little shouting. That said, they are still wild animals and could be dangerous if they are after food.
It's entirely possible that you won't see the bear again. On the other hand, IF there is food outside somewhere, you can be sure he/she will be back.
We thought it might be helpful for us to know what to do with a bear if we need to protect ourselves.
